Swift River And Deerfield River Fishing Report 6/24/16

I had a chance to get over to the Swift River on Wednesday this week. Lots of bows and browns around the Rt9 bridge up to the Y pool. A variety of flies have been reported to be working. Olive/Hares Ear/PT soft hackles 16-20, Parachute Adams 18-26 , RS2’s, Sparkle pupa’s and of course midges. Ants have also been productful. There were sulphurs coming off but it was a windy day and there was a lot of debris on the water. The Brook Trout population is quite amazing further down river past the tree pool. Bead headed soft hackle pheasant tails were effective on these beautiful fish. Hit a deep plunge pool and managed a number of brookies and a nice brown euro nymphing with a Sexy Walt sz 14. July 1 the catch and release regulations extend and it will get a healthy stocking.  Don’t be intimidated to throw flies in the 12-16 size on this river. The flow is up to 120cfs until we get a substantial rain.

Lots hatching and rising fish in the evenings. Tan Elk Hair Caddis in the catch and release areas and Light Cahills on the lower parts have been the producing flies.

Tan/Olive Caddis 12-16, Light Cahill 14-18, BWO 18-22, March Browns 12,14, March Brown Cripple Emerger 12,14,  Sulphur Dun/Parachute Sulphurs  14-18,Olive/Yellow Soft Hackle 12-18, Hare’s Ear Soft Hackle 12-18, March Brown Soft Hackle 12-16 are working well just below the surface. Olive/Natural Caddis Pupa 12-16, Soft Hackle Caddis Pupa 14-18, Pheasant Tails 10-18, Olive Hydropsyche 8-14, Tan Ryocophia 8-14, GD Czech Catnip 8-14, Prince Nymph 10-18, Hare’s Ear 10-16, Hot Spot Jig 10-16, Sexy Walt Jig 14, Olive Quill Jig 12-14, Black/Brown Stones 8-12, Olive/Brown/Black Buggers 6-12, Sculpzillas 4,8 are getting fish down deep.

Early morning and evenings are the best times to fish right now. Some good caddis hatches in the morning and most hatches going off in the late afternoon into the evening. If you can’t get them to the surface sink your fly under. This technique can provide some rewarding results. Big stimulators, pmx’s and chernobyls will start coming into play as well.
